Important Tips You Must Know Before Moving

Moving can be stressful to many of us, so useful moving tips come to save us! After being in the Moving Industry for more than five years and helped with hundreds of moves, I'm capable to provide important tips for you to master a stressful move. I hope my strategies can prepare everyone for a stress-free move!

  1. Organize before Pack

I almost always recommend organizing your belongings before packing them into boxes. Organizing enables you to get a better idea of what to keep and what to give up. There will be three steps to help you with organizing of your belongings.

Step 1: Classification

  • Classify your items to the following categories: Clothing, Books, Tablewares, and Kitchenwares

  • Then classify the rest of the miscellaneous objects to 'often used' and 'rarely used' depending of the frequency of usage.

  • Store 'often used' and 'rarely used' separately. A small tip here is to store the 'often used' objects in a more obvious place so you don't forget to pack and bring them with you on the Move Day. Even if you forgot to bring the 'rarely used' objects, there wouldn't be much of an impact on your life.

Step 2: Decluttering

  • Based on the frequency of usage and your preference, you can decide what to keep. Letting go of the excess 'stuff' can significantly benefit you when you start packing.

  • I have helped you created a brief list of things you can get rid of. Of course you can make your own lists, this is only to help you get started.

Step 3: Sequence of boxing

  • Put large and regular-shaped items in the bottom, then put in the smaller and irregular-shaped items to fill in the gaps.

  • Separate heavy items, like books, to multiple boxes. Avoid having all heavy items in one box.

  • Label the box is the key!

Hiring professional movers to help with packing is also a way to minimize damages.

2. Choosing the right Packing Tools

  • Cardboard boxes: heavy duty boxes are recommended. You can purchase boxes from the Home Depot.

  • Vacuum bags for blankets, pillow, clothes, and etc to save spaces

  • Plastic bags for shoes and smaller items

  • Plastic wraps/bubble wraps for fragile items

  • TV boxes

  • Mattress protector

  • Shrink wrap to protect furnitures

3. How to Pack for a Move? Small tips

  • How to make the cardboard boxes easy to carry?

If the boxes you bought do not have places or handles to carry by hands, you can use a cutter to cut an opening on two opposite sides of the box. This can help you easily carry boxes without handles.

  • How to pack dishes to minimize damage?

If you have paper plates, you can put a paper plate in between plates to avoid damages caused by scraping, then wrap them with bubble wraps or wrapping papers to further protect them.

  • Large coats are difficult to pack into boxes, suites are damages by folding into boxes?

If you have coat bags, you can hang your coats and suites in them. What if you do not have those bags? Don't worry! We provide wardrobe boxes to use for free. You can hang your large coats or suits in our wardrobe boxes to keep them tidy.

I hope the tips I provided above can help you with getting ready for the Move Day! The tips are made to help you get started with packing and feel free to customize the tips to make the best use of them!
